Buoyancy Control - Introduction

Outfall Pipeline Johnstone, Glasgow

Client: Scottish Water
Consultant: Entec UK - Glasgow
Main Contractor & Anchor Installer: George Leslie Ltd

Project Specification:

Fast flowing storm water running out of this pipe into Black CartWater has caused extensive scouring
of the riverbed and erosion of the bankside vegetation in the local area.

Solution:

While carrying out extensive repairs to the pipeline itself a remodelling of the pipe outfall was proposed and carried out. This involved re-aligning the direction of the outfall along with a completely new headwall arrangement. Maccaferri’s Reno type stone filled mattresses were used to line the river bed in the immediate area of pipe flow to minimise scour damage. To prevent these mattresses being lifted and damaged by the water flow from the pipeline or the Black Cart itself they were securely anchored into the riverbed. Working within a coffer dam that was used to divert the river, the anchors provided a quick and easy way of holding the mattresses and their installation used only simple hand held equipment. This solution removed the requirement for extensive riverbed excavation and the casting of a concrete slip way, so reducing the overall time on site.
