Civil Engineering and Construction - Introduction
Gloucester South West By-Pass
Client: Gloucestershire County Council
Consultant: Halcrow
Main Contractor: Norwest Holst
Anchor Installer: Smith’s (Gloucester) Ltd
A stream feeding the Gloucester and Sharpness Ship Canal needed to be redirected as part of the
overall construction of the by-pass. A new channel was cut and erosion protection measures were
required.
Several layers of material were used to create a water tight base in the channel. S6 Geo anchors were
installed and proof tested to 5kN, using hand held equipment, to secure Maccaferri MacMatR in
position and provide an easily installed erosion protection scheme. The redirected section of the river
was then linked up with the Ship Canal.
